Would You Get Caught In The Cyber RAT Trap?
Impersonation scams rose by 94% in 2020 compared to 2019, resulting in losses of over £200m.
Fraudsters, often impersonating a legitimate organisation such as HMRC, are using a tool called Remote Access Trojan (RAT) that grants full remote access to your device. Once the software has been downloaded, the criminal will ask you to check if a refund or payment has been processed by you logging into your online banking. With this access to your bank accounts, they may freely transfer money that will appear legitimate to your bank.
This scam often feels legitimate, however there are a few telling signs that will help you smell a RAT:
- Companies will not call you to offer a refund
- Never download remote access software on to your device
- Never log in to your mobile or internet banking while someone has remote access to your device
- Don't allow anyone to pressure you into accessing your bank accounts
- Never disclose passwords, or onetime pin codes.
