Impersonation scams rose by 94% in 2020 compared to 2019, resulting in losses of over £200m.
Fraudsters, often impersonating a legitimate organisation such as HMRC, are using a tool called Remote Access Trojan (RAT) that grants full remote access to your device. Once the software has been downloaded, the criminal will ask you to check if a refund or payment has been processed by you logging into your online banking. With this access to your bank accounts, they may freely transfer money that will appear legitimate to your bank.
