Excellence in Security: British Security Awards 2018

The British Security Industry Association (BSIA) has celebrated the outstanding work within the security industry on the national stage at the British Security Awards in London, on 11 July.

Held at the London Marriott Hotel, Grosvenor Square, the ceremony commenced with the Security Personnel Awards, which specifically celebrate the talent, dedication, skill and bravery exhibited by professionals during their course of duty.

The categories in which the winners were awarded in are: Best Newcomer, Best Use of Technology, Outstanding Act, Service to the Customer and Best Team. The award for best team was dedicated to Manchester Arena terror attack and the award for Service to the Customer to the Grenfell Tower disaster in 2017.

The exemplary winners of these categories include:

  • Service to the Customer – Silas Bogyere, SecuriGroup
  • Best Newcomer – Samantha Golding, Securitas UK
  • Best Use of Technology – Robert Haddon, VSG
  • Outstanding Act – Nasir Ahmed, Mitie
  • Best Team – Pennine Acute Hospital, Mitie

Winner: Silas Bogyere - SecuriGroup

Silas has been recognised for his compassion, teamwork and desire to work smarter, introducing new policies and training up teams.

He has also been recognised for his tireless charity work, where over the last few years he has led fundraising schemes, raising over £20,000 for various charities.

Silas has been described as a very proactive and passionate character, applying his time and skills in some incredible and admirable ways.

During the Grenfell Tower disaster Silas quickly updated the client and SecuriGroup on what had happened and worked to provide assistance to the affected community, raising over £1,000 and collecting and dropping off essentials to victims on the same day.

Nominated: Dougie Crabbe

Also nominated for the Service to the Customer Award, won by Silas, is Dougie Crabbe.

A key reason for the growth of our relationships with our clients is the above and beyond dedication by our excellent people such as 'Dougie'.

For all the praise we receive from CBRE, one of our key clients, and their tenants, Dougie remains humble: "I'm just doing my job."

In a commendation for his ongoing contributions, SecuriGroup Operations Director had glowing praise for Dougie: "You have shown an incredible drive to offer services above and beyond your normal day-to-day, which continues to impress everyone who works with you."

To our client, Dougie has exceeded their expectations of what can be expected from a Security Guard role.

Dougie never stops, and his attention to detail, loyalty and his approach to his site is unmatched. Our client states that there are few personnel in their portfolio who can match his effort.

He not only works long hours, but he does so with a positive attitude. Dougie takes time to know the tenants, greeting all by first name when they enter the building and works hard to memorise the contractors by person, knowing who is best placed to competently resolve any building issues.

He knows the building plant and equipment, and the function they play in the successful operation of his building. No stone is left unturned when ensuring the safety of the staff within the building. Even tasks out with his remit are met with determination, efficiency and professionalism.

Nominated: Mohammed Rashid Ibrahim

Companies often regard their successes as being the result of a collective effort, achieved by hard work brokered among many different parties, blending together to a common goal.

It is rare that a single momentous achievement can be identified and followed back in time to a single point of origin, however this is the case with Rashid.

Our relationship with a leading UK retailer has grown since taking on the Leeds store Rashid supports in 2012, and it has continued to grow in line with the development of great people such as Rashid.

He has provided real stability to SecuriGroup's service, managing a demanding client in a very competitive industry, and personifying the organisation's commitment to continuous improvement and driving industry standards.

Since rising to the position of supervisor, through the dedication to the role and commitment he has shown the company, Rashid has taken on more and more responsibility, taking all the opportunities for professional development afforded to him.

Part of this investment has been SIA training - Rashid now takes on additional CCTV duties in his site and works closely with the Store Detectives in the camera room, in addition to his normal duties.

Within the team, Rash is an effective leader. He has full control over the supervision, training and individual development of the entire guarding team which regularly achieve the highest scores in monthly feedback sessions with the regional management team.

What stands out in the feedback, week after week, is Rash's effective support of the client: they are deeply impressed by his natural ability and how the statistics reflect his instincts for detecting shoplifters. His impressive actions regularly lead to arrests, and without his support the store would have suffered significant stock loss over the years.

James Kelly, Chief Executive, BSIA said "I would like to close by paying tribute to our winners and finalists for some truly outstanding displays of customer service, teamwork, technical aptitude, bravery and courage, and for their overall commitment to both the organisations they work for and the industry they represent."

"Often the work of our industry is under the radar when it comes to recognising the contributions of the various services that are involved in dealing with the security incidents we read about locally and nationally, and I hope that today's celebration of these exemplary individuals on the national stage goes some way to remedying this."

"We look forward to the British Security Awards becoming the national event that recognises the true talent, commitment and achievements of the industry's finest."
