In Conversation with Contract Manager, Andrew Blythe, on Port Security

ports

As we mark seven wonderful years of partnership with Forth Ports, one of the UK's largest port operators, we had the opportunity to sit down with Contract Manager, Andrew Blythe, to talk about the intricacies of port security.

As one of our most prestigious contracts, we take great pride in the collaboration our teams embody every day, whilst ensuring the safety and security of port assets, as well as welcoming visitors from far and wide during the ever-eventful cruise season.

Q: What does port security involve?

I oversee security operations at one of the UK's largest import/export ports, where nine million tonnes of cargo pass through annually. Our primary responsibility is access control, which includes conducting vehicle searches upon entry and exit, as well as ensuring the proper vehicle passes are in place.

Q What is the scale of security measures at a port?

Across the multiple ports we oversee, we provide 87,000+ hours of security annually to maintain safety and security.

During the cruise season, we accommodate 160 cruise ships, welcoming international visitors. I recently participated in the plaque exchange ceremony for the newest Viking ship, which is expected to bring in 22,000 passengers across the season.

Q: What advice would you give to someone considering a career in port security?

Working in a port environment allows you to interact with a diverse range of international individuals. A significant aspect of the role involves customer service, so if you enjoy meeting and greeting people, it is a rewarding position. The ability to work under pressure and stay alert is crucial given the constant flow of people and vehicles entering and exiting the port.

Through the insights shared by Andrew, we gain a deeper understanding of the dedication and vigilance required to maintain port security. By upholding these standards, we contribute to strengthening society and fostering an environment where ports can thrive safely.
